Cutting Scale
Posted by Duch | 11:00 am
My initial reaction to the cutting scale designed by Jim Termeer and Jess Giffin was instinctively positive; in retrospect probably because it combines two of my main interests: technology and cooking.
Don’t get me wrong, I still think the idea of incorporating a scale onto a cutting board in and of itself is rather interesting, but as hard as I try to find a practical reason for these two kitchen instruments to be combined, I can’t.
I can’t think of a single “choppable” ingredient – because that is what you use a cutting board for – that also needs to be measured in grams. I chop onions, but even assuming I can’t judge how much I need without following the recipe step by step, recipes hardly ever tell you how many grams of chopped onions you need; they will more likely say you need 1, 2, etc. onions.
On the other hand, all the ingredients I usually need a scale for don’t seem to be very suitable for weighing on a cutting board: for instance, 250g of flower; 100g of cocoa, and so on.
That said, the 10’’ x 5’’ cutting scale looks really edgy, and will maybe be followed by many future products that will bring more “geekiness” into the kitchen.

P40 Articulated Chair

This super adjustable lounge chair may be super pricey, but it’s also super swank. Designed by Osvaldo Borsani way back in 1954 and still way stylish today, the P40 Articulated Chair ($6,500) features an adjustable headrest, movable rubber armrests, an extending footrest, and a bunch of joints that can be folded numerous ways. You can keep it in a lounge position to relax and read a book or fold it up so it becomes a chair to work at your desk. Way cool.
Environmentally Friendly Fireplace
Posted by Duch | 11:45 am
Environmentally friendly doesn’t have to be ugly, the EcoSmart Fire fireplace proves that. This sleek fireplace is flueless and runs on denatured alcohol, which is just a fancy word for ethanol, the same kind of ethanol fuel that you use for your camping stove. But this is no camping stove, after all it would be kind of weird snuggling before a stove.
The EcoSmart Fire is a sure and easy solution to raise the pimp-factor of one’s place. Freestanding models are portable and require no installation, making them ideal for small spaces and apartment living.

Electrolux Declares War On White
Posted by Duch | 10:19 am
Electrolux one of the biggest appliance manufactures has declared War on White(WoW). Their first WoW appliance they introduced is the Screenfridge, which have decorative designs on the front instead of your typical white, black, or stainless finish. It’s all inspired by different design disciplines outside of the appliance industry, such as fashion, interior design and architecture.
Electrolux is also expecting to do the same treatment to many other home appliances.
“It has become clear that now more than ever, people want unique products that allow them to express their individuality through their choices” says Henrik Otto, Senior Vice President Global Design at Electrolux.
My opinion is it’s always nice to see art introduce in things that you would never expect, but your typical stainless design is sleek enough for me.

Heat-Sensing Faucets by Hansa
Posted by Duch | 10:26 am
Technology is a good thing it can make life easier but sometimes it can border on the ridiculous. And the later category can be used to described the new Hansacanyon faucet which has a built in temperature sensor and will change colors accordingly; blue for cold, purple for warm, and red for hot. Now I’m not too sure what use this has because if I had one of these I would still test the temperature of the water myself to get it just right.
These faucets may be ridiculous but I still can’t help myself from wanting one. They don’t really serve much use but I’m a sucker for things that are stylish and cool.
